The Story of "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer"

The extremely popular Christmas song Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer began as a poem created by Robert May, an ad executive. He was supposed to write a poem that could be handed to children by the department store Santa Clauses! Robert May had a natural flair with words and was able to compose the poem to appeal to children. This marketing ploy was a smashing success and nearly 2.5 million Rudolph poems were given away in the first year of its publication! In 1949 the singer Gene Autry recorded a musical version of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer composed by Johnny Marks.

Rudolph, the red-nosed reindeer
had a very shiny nose.
And if you ever saw him,
you would even say it glows.

All of the other reindeer
used to laugh and call him names.
They never let poor Rudolph
join in any reindeer games.

Then one foggy Christmas Eve
Santa came to say:
"Rudolph with your nose so bright,
won't you guide my sleigh tonight?"

Then all the reindeer loved him
as they shouted out with glee,
Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer,
you'll go down in history!
